Whatever the reason for the loss of sleep, this disorder affects both mentally and physically. While we sleep, our bodies secrete hormones that affect our mood, energy, memory, and concentration.
Tests have shown that with a driving simulator or hand-eye coordination task, sleep-deprived people can perform as poorly as intoxicated people. Additionally, recent research has shown that chronic lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure and contribute to problems with diabetes.
If you find it difficult to fall asleep at night, the invitation is not to resort to artificial and dangerous medications that can endanger your health. There are many other natural ways to sleep that consist of relaxing the body and mind to the point where natural and restful sleep can occur. - Prayer: one of the most important and recurrent forms of meditation in these times. It is a time of great intimacy with God, where you can ask for a lot of tranquility and to be able to sleep in a deep and lasting way.
- The baths: there is nothing more relaxing than a bath before going to bed. Cold water is a muscle relaxant par excellence. Hot tub baths are usually more invigorating so it is not recommended in these cases. Add to your bath with cold water, 5 drops of lavender essential oil and get ready for a pleasant experience of great relaxation. Herbal baths are also highly recommended, you can use chamomile, sage, passionflower or lemon balm.
- The diet: avoid ingesting invigorating beverages such as coffee, ginger or black tea, also avoid consuming foods such as onions, foods with too many condiments or spices and foods rich in sugar. Drink milk with some anise grains, heat it and drink it before going to sleep.
- Infusions: they are highly recommended in these cases. In boiling water you can add a large tablespoon of catnip or dried chamomile. Let it rest and drink the infusion before going to bed. Mix equal parts nasturtium and chickweed. Add a little valerian. Add a tablespoon of this mixture to a cup. Pour a cup of boiling water over the herbs. Cover it and let it rest. Drink it holding your nose.
- Pillows: you can put a few drops of lavender essence on the pillowcase before going to sleep, the smell generates a feeling of comfort that will help you fall asleep. Prepare a muslin bag. Mix half a cup of each of the following dried herbs: lemon balm, lavender, hops. Close the bag by sewing it. Place it under your pillow (or next to your head, if you sleep without a pillow) and let its fragrance gently put you to sleep.
- Aromatherapy: Among the essential oils that induce rest are those of lavender, chamomile, neroli, benzoin, bergamot, sandalwood and ylang-ylang. Drop a few drops of any of these oils onto a tissue and breathe in the scent as you get ready for bed. Do not apply these oils to the skin or take them internally.
- Other ideas: Before going to bed, spend 10 minutes sitting in silence: no radio, no television, no music, no conversation. Reflect calmly on what you have done during the day. When you are in bed, spend a few minutes reflecting on the activities of the day, but in reverse order: getting into bed, getting ready for bed, the events of the night, those in the afternoon, those in the morning, getting up. Some people use this technique to fall asleep. Sleep with your head facing north. Have one of the following stones in your hand or on a piece of jewelry you are wearing, or put near your bed: amethyst, aquamarine, blue tourmaline, kunzite, moonstone, lepidolite, peridot. All of them produce restorative rest according to tradition.
